I have fibro and teach fitness for part of my income. I teach about 8 hrs a week.
Isolated repetitive small contractions flare up my Phibro. I can do Calais statics yoga any long chain full body dynamic exercises even running and cycling. I recommend high intensity exercises and not isolated exercises like Pilates I believe contracting only part of the muscles over and over flares
up our nervous system. I hope you find an exercise program that works. Maybe try to hit class for 20 minutes and see how your body responds.
Yes water helps more than any other exercise ... You do not have restraints it helps, at first it hurts so do it every other day or less time walk in the water. @A MyFibroTeam Member
water therapy is helping me with the pain in my legs I can't swim because I have had a double mastectomy recently and can't bring my arms over my head yet because of the muscle and nerves that were cut at the time but just walking up and down in the pool helps and it is a heated pool so that is even better and I always have better days just after doing this.
So yes water therapy can be of assistance but then again what works for some won't always work for another.
That is great insight Alisia, thank you! I have found that PiYo (any class, DVD, etc. that combines Yoga with a little bit of Pilates for constant movement vs holding a pose) significantly reduces my everyday pain (not actual flare ups). It really seems to help me keep my body/muscles stretched out. All of the poses can be modified to your ability and pain level each day. My problem is being consistent!
I had a YMCA membership for a short while and swam in a warm pool. It really did help. I did water exercises. Then I had to quit because I couldn't get transportation. Now I live down on Cape Cod and have access to the ocean this summer, so I can swim for a few months. I am happy about that. Salt water is very good for the human body. I hope you find a gentle exercise that helps you personally.
