Members responded to a question about difficulty breathing and chest tightness by sharing a wide range of potential causes and personal experiences, including anxiety and panic attacks, acid reflux and GERD (which several members noted can cause shortness of breath and heart flutters), overactive nerves heightened by fibromyalgia, and existing lung conditions. Several members offered practical coping strategies, including splashing cold water on the face to ease breathing, taking GERD medications consistently to prevent symptoms, and forced coughing to open airways. A recurring theme was the frustrating cycle of physical symptoms triggering anxiety, which in turn worsens breathing difficulties, with members offering empathy and solidarity around navigating these interconnected challenges.

I do sometimes. I can be sitting at the computer or standing on our balcony when it happens. Not doing anything in particular and I become aware that I am not able to breathe properly. I am taking very shallow breaths. It feels hard to breath. Sounds kind of silly but when I splash cold water on my face I can breath easier. It works for me.
