Hints On Working Out
A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

I belong to Planet Fitness and started taking abs classes twice a week. 3 weeks in feeling pretty good. On Wednesday we also did some squats and free weights for the upper body. I am hurting so bad I can't function. Did I over do it?

As I understood it, the fascia is a thin strong elastic almost transparent connective tissue that wraps around the muscles and other structures inside our bodies. It is very strong and important. You know how you see an almost invisible, translucent covering when you are cutting chicken to cook ? That is the fascia. It acts as a sort of protective armor when tight but ours does not then release when it should, so it does not have the flexibility it should. Myofascial release as my Rheumatologist has explained it, is a slow type of massage that is supposed to target the fascia and give longer relief than regular massage. I have not yet tried it though. I don't know of anyone in Paris who does it although I am sure there is. I forgot to ask the doctor and he forgot to tell me. Next time I see him I will ask. I may have this incorrect, I am trying to remember what he told me but the fibro fog tends to get in the way and I do not always take in everything and I have no medical bkgrd.

My PM&R doc told me that instead of building muscle lifting weights in fibro patients actually breaks the muscle down. He said not to do it. I was referred to aqua therapy. Also, Epson Salts in a hot bath nightly really helps.

Oh, and massages really help - esp right now, when you are sore from your gym. They stretch and relax your achy muscles although to really work, you need them regularly. I have been told that myofascial release therapy is good but have not tried it. I am going to the States (CA) though this summer and have an appt. to try it. Now, I get a gentle but excellent swedish massage every week. But I have read that myofascial release therapy has longer lasting effects. And of course warm baths often help a bit. Good luck !
