I suffer from insomnia but at the moment during the day I can't keep my eyes open. I'm falling to sleep watching TV, at work, in the car, anywhere. I don't sleep at night and have to force myself to stay awake, I can't sleep at work obviously and if I went to bed instead of watching TV I wouldn't sleep.

Is there anything I can do to keep myself awake?

Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks

Members connected deeply over the exhausting cycle of daytime drowsiness paired with nighttime insomnia, with many sharing that they experience the same frustrating pattern of falling asleep during the day but lying awake all night despite being exhausted. Several members offered practical strategies, including trying melatonin or sleep aids like Zopiclone, asking doctors to check thyroid levels and rule out sleep apnea, taking magnesium or valerian root, and working with a psychiatrist who specializes in fibromyalgia-related sleep issues. A recurring theme was the critical importance of getting proper sleep for managing fibromyalgia symptoms overall, advocating firmly with doctors for solutions, and not attributing every symptom to fibromyalgia without ruling out other medical causes like hypothyroidism or sleep disorders.

You probably should check in with your doctor to be sure your symptoms are being caused by fibromyalgia and not some other problem. I have always been tired with fibromyalgia but got to where I simply could not stay awake for more than a few minutes at a time. After a visit to the physician who did some blood tests, I discovered I also have hypothyroidism. Now that I am being treated for that, I am back to the familiar feeling of fatigue caused by fibromyalgia. I am in no way saying that you suffer from hypothyroidism! But, instead, I am trying to impress on you that sometimes blaming all symptoms on fibromyalgia can be dangerous and hugely unpleasant symptoms can go untreated. Whatever is causing your issue, I hope you find the cause and get relief soon.

Hugs to you! I know what you mean about this group being helpful. I have never been able to talk to anyone about what I am going through, since no one understands. Congratulations on the progress you have made! I understand how hard it is for some. I think I have "talked" more about my problem since finding this group than I ever have.....learning early to suffer in silence, since my problems were all in my head. Here is to talking, listening, sharing and learning. May we all come out of it smarter, healthier, and in general better people.

I don't know if you have any other things on your mind or getting you down but as the Doctors told me enough sleep is absolutely essential at night for your body and your mind. I take Agomelatine which is part of the melatonin type sedative meds ( & unfortunately my 8 year old is taking 10mg of melatonin to rectify the huge sleep issues) or Trazodone is a very good sedative antidepressant- can be given 'off license'. But I agree with many of the group saying that you must insist that your GP does a full set of blood tests as not everything should just be blamed on having Fibro. Have you tried on of the sleep apps like Pillow or Headspace? As you can choose the music for relaxation and bedtime sounds, they're worth a try while you get thoroughly checked out. With Headspace you can get a free trial, so it's worth a try. There's no right or wrong answer to give you as although we are all in the same position in many ways we should still be treated on an individual basis. Thinking of you. Gentle hugs 🤗

@scfc that's really interesting because my mom told me I never slept more than two hours a night with no nap until I was about 8. But I've been struggling with sleeping issues since I was about 16 and I can't remember before that. I just remember getting up to go to school and I'd barely had any sleep at all. They said it was due to ADHD but I've never taken meds for it and actually think something else has been going on. I also had extreme anxiety as a teen and preteen. Pretty sure I had depression also. But my parents aren't into doctors and so I'm just starting to be diagnosed with all sorts of stuff. I really wish they would of had me checked at least about the anxiety because it's totally changed the way my life has gone. Still trying to find out what is my actual problems. At 30 I started to be treated for the anxiety and depression and sleep problems only because my boyfriend went and held my hand at the doctor. I couldn't even call and make an appointment less talk to the doctor. I would have a panic attack and it made me cry I couldn't do the simplest things. I even was able to get a degree in Accounting and Business Administration, but I blew it completely at job interviews. So I gave up entirely and fell into worse depression. I've never even worked in my field I was trained for. I'm sorry, that was way more than I was going to say. I guess sometimes this is therapeutic just getting everything out. I am not completely cured from my ailments but my medication helps a lot and I am able to call on the phone and talk to people although it is uncomfortable still for me at times, but I am still able to take care of things I need to. Hugs ♡♡ Thanks for sharing and reading. :)
