What Do You Do To Help Yourself Feel Better Or To Improve Your Mood?
A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

Everyone has their little tricks for what helps when they are feeling bad. I know I have a list of things I try when I'm hurting and also things I do to improve my mood. I was thinking we could all share our tricks and learn from each other.

Hi @A MyFibroTeam Member. Yes Lavendar essential oil is what I use. I use it for heaps of stuff but I've found rubbing some into my temples really helps if I'm struggling. Peppermint is also great for achy painful spots.
I also use Aspercreme, had to order it from the US (I'm in Aussie), and haven't had it for long but I get really bad RLS at night and it seems to help quite a bit. I have a variety of other topicals I use, but the only one really worth mentioning is Capsaicin cream. Helps to draw out the Substance P levels from the body to dial down the pain signals. Great stuff but you have to use it frequently.
Ok, here is a list of my vitamins/supplements that I use plus what I use it for, it's a long list, I don't take everything everyday, but they all have benefits:
Magnesium - for muscles, pain, and also for me to reduce heart palpitations
Vitamin D - generally I am deficient in VitD and supplementing helps with multiple issues
Circumin (turmeric) - to reduce pain and inflammation
L-Trytophan - another one I had to order from overseas, but it is to help with the production of serotonin and to assist with sleep
Liquid Melatonin - for sleep
5-HTP time release - new one I have just started, don't have any clue as to how well it works yet, but it is also for sleep (I have mammoth sleep problems)
Adrenoplex - nervous system support and to relieve anxiety
Zinc - immune support
Multi B vitamin - same as Vit D reasons, I am usually deficient in this and supplementing is for multi system support (immune/nervous).
The only one I am not supplementing right now is iron and folate. I have anaemia but supplements don't work and an iron infusion made me sick. I think it might be the underlying contributor to pain, fatigue, sleep issues, worsening RLS, so I need to get it sorted just not sure how. I have a malabsorption issue in my gut so diet isn't a massive help, but I'm working on it!
Whew! What a list! Hope this is useful!

When I get completely out of sorts due to pain, fibro fog, asthma, etc., I like to sit quietly and play soothing music or just music that makes me happy. It calms me down and I do feel comfort from it. It doesn't get rid of the pain, but it soothes the anxiety and then I can at least deal with the pain better. Add a hot bath with aromatherapy candles and lights off and it's even better.

Yes, I'm not a doctor & you should always check with a dr or pharmacy, as some vitamin can interfere with prescribed meds. But, vitamins are very important! Especially vitamins D and B, most of us with fibro need LOTS of both, because we are deficient. I don't just mean a daily multivitamin and your done. The "b" should be a complex with b2, niacin, b6, b12, and pantothenic acid... either by a shot or sublingual (under the tongue) daily. Minimum 5,000 units of vitamin D. Min. Of 1,000 calcium, min. 400 magnesium.

I will post a few of my things but I bet they are very common ones. When I am hurting, depending on where it is I either use a heating pad or ice packs. I also have inflammation (which is caused by an autoimmune condition not fibro) so for that I have I have to use ice but for fibro pain heat usually works better and cold actually makes it worse. Sometimes I take a hot soak in epsom salts and I've found I like the Dr Teal's with peppermint the best. I also sometimes use Aspercreme for achy areas and that helps me better than other topical things I've tried. I try to stretch every day and I use a large @exercise ball or a wall or corner and do some floor stretches/yoga. I always feel better when I do that than when I miss stretching. The best thing for my shoulders is something my dr told me to try and you go to a corner and do like a push up. Sometimes doing that actually brings down my pain level a lot. For my back I lay with my back on the @exercise ball and reach my arms and feet to the floor, reaching foot and hands to the base of the ball.

For my mood I like to read. I really hate it when I can't read because of fibrofog. Sometimes I listen to audio books but I usually keep spacing out and have to rewind. I much prefer reading to audio books but that is just me. I also like to do crafts, especially crochet. I knit too but I'm a newer knitter so if I'm feeling bad I'm going to crochet since I've been crocheting since I was a kid and don't have to think about what I'm doing so much. I also like to listen to music. I have different playlists depending on how I feel. Sometimes I need to really rock out because I feel wound up and maybe a bit angry about being in pain so much. That's OKAY! I just roll with that and turn up some music and rock out and clean. Other times I have a list that is more sad or mellow. I have a large list of singer/songwriter songs that I heard on a movie or tv show and looked up. Usually I just like the easy feel of the music more than the lyrics. I have a list of songs where the lyrics mention pain or different things that relate to how I'm feeling but are not too depressing. Anyway, you get the idea. If you feel a certain way you can let yourself feel that way or you can play something upbeat to try to change your mood to something more positive/upbeat.

I also write down quotes or song lyrics that help me in a journal that I look through when I'm hurting. I also write down what I'm feeling at the time. That helps. I have books where I have highlighted lines or marked them with a tab. That way I can flip right to one and read a little something that will help. One book I really like is Help Yourself by David Pelzer.

I also like to paint my nails. I have an embarrassingly large box full of nail stuff and depending on how I feel I paint my nails. I never liked to use dark colors when I was younger but now I don't care, especially for my toes. Royal blue or dark purple, all different types of glitters or decals etc. It just keeps me busy and keeps my mind off the pain and also makes me feel better about how I look. Just pamper yourself. (had to put this in another comment because I went too long. Oops!)
