Need Help Losing Weight, Without Surgery. Any Suggestions Would Be Appreciated.
A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have noticed that since my Lyrica made me gain 30 lbs that my fibro pain has gotten worse. I know I need to lose weight, Doctor says so too. I am having difficulty doing this as I can only walk for exercise because of pain and because it is free. Any at home exercises or a supplement or diet change idea would be appreciated. I do gentle stretching exercises throughout the day which helps with the pain. Reference material that you have found helpful is also good. Thanks.

Walking is great exercise! It's better than running. Do what you can each day. Start with what you can do and increase by 5 min each time as tolerated. I used to be a Health coach and teach boot camp. I know you should drink half your weight in ounces of water every day. This will help you lose weight. Water, walking, and eating clean. A good meal is 6 ounces of lean protein, about the size of a small chicken breast, or make a turkey burger without the bread. Some fish is good also. Now, add a cup of fresh greens, broccoli or something similar, you can mix it up. 1\3 cup brown rice, or a small sweet potato. Also you can use a protein shake to substitute one or two meals a day. Also, do not use salt on anything, use herbs or seasonings that are salt free, no butter. I like to make ground turkey, broccoli and brown rice and put it in containers so you have meals prepared for the week or at least several days. I mix the ingredients together and put about a tablespoon of salsa on mine for some flavor. It may taste weird at first, but you get used to it. I feel better and start losing weight. Have more energy on this diet. Then, once a week, go ahead and cheat and eat something you are craving. Don't overdo it. I found I started looking forward to eating my meals because they made me feel healthier and gave me more energy. Don't forget the water. Leave out any added sugar, you can use Stevia instead for coffee or tea. Also, don't forget to stretch every day. I lost 50 lbs on this diet, while walking about one hour a day, 6 days a week. Start with what you can do and increase it as you can. It will get easier with time. Best advice I can give. Hope you found this useful. :) Also, a good breakfast is three egg whites, you can cook with cooking spray add in some peppers and onion for flavor, I like a little salsa on mine. Also a small package of oatmeal plain. Use the stevia for sweetness. You can eat these two meals and use a protein shake for lunch. For snacks, eat some carrots or something healthy to curb your craving. It will be hard at first, but your body will adjust to this over time and drink that water!!! You will not be as hungry. Did you know that our brains cannot understand the difference between being hungry or thirsty???? So before you go to eat, drink about a bottle of water and wait 20 min. If you're still hungry, then have that snack. You'll be surprised that you just needed water instead of food. ;) Had to add that in, it's really helped me a lot. Thanks for reading, I hope you will get something from this information. :)

@A MyFibroTeam Member Sure thing, here is a link, there are recipes also. https://www.pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=21%20d...
One really helpful printable shows the different containers and how much they hold (i.e. 1 cup or 1/2 cup etc) so you really could just use measuring cups.

I am having a really hard time losing weight and my doctors also tell me I really need to lose. I have a family history of heart disease and type 2 diabetes so I really want to lose weight to prevent that. I just have so much pain whenever I start exercising and I barely ever make it 10 minutes. I do stretch like you but cardio is what we really need the most and that is so hard for me to achieve. I just started a diet program called The 21 day fix by beachbody.com. I met a lady that is a coach (there are a lot of them and to tell the truth they are more sales people than actual coaches although many of them do learn a lot about health and fitness and how to help people with their specific needs - just want to make sure you are aware of that and be ready to say NO! if you contact them.) A lot of their programs are expensive but they are good. The first time I talked to a coach I got an exercise program called PiYo and also got their shake mix called shakeology which is great but also expensive- too expensive so I had to stop getting it. Anyway, Piyo It is a great program that is like a mix between yoga moves and cardio but no jumping and they have someone doing modified moves for those who can't do as much. It really helped me when I could do it but I was trying to keep up with the group (private facebook group for the program) and my coach didn't understand that I couldn't just push through the pain and keep going. I would try so hard to get through the session and then couldn't get out of bed the next day. I just recently met another coach that is not near as pushy and much more understanding. She recommended the Fixate program. The 21 day fix is the diet program plus an exercise program but they do a lot of jumping around and I knew I couldn't do that but there is also a cookbook with a set of colorful containers for measuring portions for the different food groups (that is called Fixate). The cookbook has some info on the diet and it is $35 and that is what I got. I was able to find a lot of free printables on pinterest that further explain the diet program and are very helpful. There is also a free app for smartphones that is called 21 day fix. You put in your weight and it tells you how many of each color container you should have each day and you spread them out across the day. Red is for meat, green for veggies, yellow for carbs etc. The diet is based on clean eating. If you are interested in more info on that just ask and I can point you to the printables I've found helpful. I'm not a coach and never will be and I don't sell anything but I can help you with info that I've learned. This is helping me where many other things haven't. I am hopeful that if I lose weight my joint pain will not be as bad and I'll be able to exercise more. I plan on doing the Piyo program again but slower. I think for me shorter sessions would be better with a break ever other day or maybe a walk that day.

Thanks everyone! I have copied down everything and will start going through all the info and see what works best for me. I definitely have a love of sugar that has to go. I am going to be trying the measuring my portions and adding healthier meals to start and go from there. Thank you.

Actually, I was reading your comments about cardio, actually, cardio raises your metabolism, but walking actually burns fat. So if you want to burn fat, you need to stay just under the cardio zone. :)
