It helps to explain to another person who doesn't have Fibromyalgia how we have to measure how many units of energy we have for a day and not go above that unless we borrow from the next day which means the next day we have even less because if we go over this it has a knock-on effect and we end up either super tired or in more pain than usual or both. The spoon symbolises a unit of energy so for example taking a shower uses 1 spoon but if we have to wash our hair as well then that's 2 spoons, getting dressed is another spoon and so on but a normal person can just go about their day and not worry about how many spoons they have or how many spoons they are using. It's a great short story to share with other people to help explain the difficulties and choices we have to make every day. made the world of difference in getting my now ex partner to understand and also my daughter before she ended up with fibro herself. Tattoo's with spoons are very popular with Fibro patients in the US. I watch some of the tattoo shows on TV and one Fibro lady wanted something with spoons.... and the tattooer asked about other things in her life and she mentioned that she loved the windy weather they were having, and took walks in it.... had since she was a kid.......... and they talked about everything she loved (birds, flowers, etc) ... so the tattooer tells her to come back in couple of hours, and designed the most beautiful tattoo ever..... it was a wind chime, with hanging spoons, all beautifully designed with flowers and birds, and the top was like the man in moon, only with the wind maker with cheeks puffed out............ the lady cried she was so happy.... it was a thing of beauty and I guess if can't beat it, you can try to celebrate it.............. I'd get that on my back in a heart beat...........
