Members shared their varied experiences applying for disability benefits due to fibromyalgia and chronic pain, with most reporting that initial denials are common but approval is possible with persistence, strong medical documentation, and legal representation. Several members described waiting periods ranging from two to over three years, particularly in states like New Jersey where backlogs can significantly delay hearings, and emphasized the financial and emotional toll of the process, including reliance on family support and credit cards to survive while awaiting decisions. A recurring theme was the importance of having detailed medical records from specialists like rheumatologists, documenting not just physical symptoms but also mental health impacts, and never giving up despite multiple denials because back pay can provide crucial relief once approved.

Yes I got my disability on Fibro, that was yrs ago . I just told what the Fibro had slowly done to my ability to work. It was a long session but when they could hear what it had done to me step by step and my ability to less and less until I couldn't even care for my 2yr old grandson they granted me disability.

I also live in NJ and I was denied 2x. I got a lawyer and I am waiting to hear when I will get a court date. It could take a year and a half. If it wasn't for my family I would be on the streets. Not fair for someone who has spent her life caring for others.

thanks Darnelle. I would love to hear more about people who were able to get Federal Disability for their Fibromyalgia, especially in NJ. I stopped working 6/2013. Applied for Disability 10/2013. Was denied 3 times by 5/2014 which was also when I got my dx. Got a lawyer who requested a hearing 7/2014. I finally got my hearing before a judge 8/2016!!! NJ is working with 6 judges (down from 11). Social Security said I would get my answer in 3 months. Another client of my lawyer's had her hearing in 4/2016 and hasn't heard yet. NJ is HORRIBLE when it comes to social security disability claims. I am a single parent of two grown children who are both in college full time. My financial stress is off the charts. Thank God I didn't loose my house. But I trust the Lord with take care of me. Mathew 7:7.

@A MyFibroTeam Member Yes! I started applying for Disability right after diagnosis. That was about 14 yrs ago when doctors were telling us it was all in our heads, however, I first went to a Rheutologist and he diagnosed me with Fibro and Chronic Fatigue. He prescribed meds. I then went to my doctor of 18 yrs and she agreed and took over prescribing what I needed. I was turned down the first time (par for the course) and turned down also for my work disability. I then got an attorney for my work Disability and he worked hard for me. After 2 yrs I was approved. By then of course, we had used credit cards to live as my salary was more than my husbands. If approved, you will get the back pay which helps a lot. Use the doc who diagnosed you and if you have another doc who has helped you and you have seen several times. If you want to get an Attorney get one that does believe in Fibro/CF or you can file yourself. Try because there should be a lot known about this now. God be with you and if you have anymore questions I can help with let me know. Hugs
