A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

I find when I have to get blood work done.. my veins are really deep and are hard to find.. Is it just me or is it everyone else.. I drink lots of water to stay hydrated like they say and I still have issues.. just had some blood work done and they had to take from my right hand .. almost at the knuckles.. hurt like hell...hope no one else has this issue but it would be nice to know i am not alone in this aspect..

I too have a problem getting blood work done by a nurse. Its seems to me that us Fibromites have muscles, veins and such that is in a constant state of contracture. It only makes sense that our blood vessels are capable of doing the same. I cringe at the thought of blood work because I will repeatedly get poked till they decide to go to my knuckles my hand. My arm starts showing all the black and bruised spots as if I was beaten in the arm. It I'd sore. I dread getting blood work. I doubt any of us enjoy it or are even comfortable with the procedure
The same is true when I have 6 infiltrations put in my spine except the pain is worse than blood tests.I take deep slow cleansing breathes. This helps with the needle pains.

No you are not alone. I am a nurse but I am also a certified phlebotomist. There are so many people who have deep veins, rolling viens, etc. It is a very, very common issue. If you can't get the arm, the second try is always the hand. And yes it does hurt more there because there are so many nerves on the top of your hands. To get blood from a vein in the hand the vein cannot be on top of a tendon. I hope that's not what happened! It hurts and it'e not proper procedure.
Best thing to do when you go in for a blood draw, tell the phlebotomist where you want them to try first. You know you body the best and you know where the best results will come from. If you know you have deep veins in your arms, just tell them that you don't want them to attempt there and just go for the hand first attempt. You have all the rights. There is nothing worse then getting stuck multiple times.
Sorry about all your sticks. Hope you feel better soon.

@A MyFibroTeam Member sorry that you have these problems, but I am thankful to say I don't have this problem! I have been having to have my blood drawn every three months since about 1992, and in the last couple of years since diagnosed with Diabetes, another doctor has my blood drawn on a different every three month schedule lol! The only time I have ever had a problem, it was because the vampire didn't know what he was doing so I told to get someone in there that knows what they were doing, another vampire came in and got it on the first try!!!!!!!!!

Oh i forewarned them when we started at this clinic in town here.. most of the staff know me as the problem patient..lol.. I have no problems standing up and saying thats not gonna work.. my husband also has to be in the room with me.. so if I cant.. he will .. tho its kinda embarassing having to have someone hold your hand to get bloodwork done in your 40s(even tho I usually say I am 29 and holding..lol)
