Hi friends! I have insomnia. Can't fall asleep and wake up several times during the night. My deep sleep is very interrupted. I do all the right things like no caffeine, gentle yoga, relaxing music, warm baths and still a problem. I take lorazepam now and it helps me to relax but I am concerned due to it being a benzo. I would like to try something else. I can not tolerate trazadone or antihistamines and melatonin, valerian and chamomile do not work at all! Any recommendations of a… read more

Members shared their experiences with various sleep medications for insomnia, with Ambien emerging as the most frequently mentioned option, though several cautioned about side effects like sleep-walking, cooking while asleep, and online shopping without memory of it. Many community members described alternative approaches that have worked for them, including amitriptyline, Belsomra (a newer medication that some found works like natural sleep), quetiapine, trazodone, valerian root, magnesium, essential oils, Epsom salt baths, and even mental mantras to quiet racing thoughts. A recurring theme was the frustration of insurance companies denying newer medications, the challenge of finding the right solution when so many options cause unwanted effects, and the shared understanding that fibromyalgia-related insomnia is a physical issue rather than simply a stress management problem.

Suffered for 7 yrs with sleep disorder. I just couldn't do the 'falling' asleep bit. After 2 or 3 nights I would crash from exhaustion for 3-4 hrs and restart the cycle. Believe me I tried every med and natural and Old wives cures I heard of. Amitriptyline 50mg is the only thing that lets me 'fall'. Been using for 2 yrs now. Only side effect I have is very dry mouth. I always chew gum.

I like Stress Away essential oil from Young Living. For migraines Topamax is a great preventative but I get too many side effects so I don't take it all the time. Also Imitrex at the first feeling of a migraine.

@A MyFibroTeam Member Oh my! Thanks for saying about the nightmares! That is something I need to avoid then. No Lunesta.

Ambien made me cook in my sleep and eat most or all of the food I prepared and I wouldn't remember it the next morning. My kitchen was always trashed in the morning and I blamed the kids. My daughter caught me sleep walking/ cooking and told me I was very cohesive and talked with her while I cooked my food. Then I tossed my plate, with food on it into the sink (which I never ever did or do). I stopped the drug immediately the next day. It scared me really bad. I still suffer from insomnia. I fall asleep fairly quick on 200 MG of Trazodone but I don't stay asleep. Also I don't go into REM sleep but about 1% of my sleep time. It's been documented several times in sleep studies done on me. I wish you luck in finding something to help you fall sleep and stay asleep. Many hugs.

@A MyFibroTeam Member These darn insurance companies can prevent our well-being at times huh? Frustrating to say the least when all we want is a good nights sleep. Maybe just get a very small script for a couple of other drugs then they will be satisfied. Like 5 pills each. lol Thanks for letting me know about Belsomra! I am so happy for you that you did find something that works. How do you take it and how how does it affect you? Is it like ambien where you have to go to sleep in 30 minutes or you can hallucinate? Are any of the other meds you are on helping with fibro pain like gabapentin? I thought that gaba would help sleep?
