I imagine that there will be many affirmative answers to this question. My doctors have given me medications to 'help' the problem that I'm having. I immediately gain a lot of weight (recent steroid injections as an example with 10+ lbs. weight gain in as many days) along with not being able to exercise or very little. I always watch my diet and make it as healthy and moderate as possible. Right afterwards I'm told, "you've gained weight and now have xxxx healthy problem. You must lose… read more

Members shared their frustration with medication-induced weight gain, particularly from steroids like prednisone, Lyrica, Neurontin, and amitriptyline, describing rapid weight increases that prove extremely difficult to reverse despite healthy eating and exercise efforts. Several members offered practical strategies including researching medications before taking them, advocating firmly with doctors about side effects and dosages, trying gentle movement like stretching or Tai Chi, reducing carbohydrates, and exploring alternatives such as massage therapy and CBD oil. A recurring theme was the importance of self-advocacy with medical teams, as many members felt dismissed when doctors acknowledged that medication and hormonal changes made weight loss nearly impossible yet offered no actionable solutions or alternative approaches.

I research everything my doctors offer before I decide to take any of it, I now also tell them what I NEED and get the testing done, I went undiagnosed with hypothyroidism so my weight is ridiculous and I EAT LIKE A BIRD , the medication now has my thyroid normal but can't stop it but I should be able to lose weight now if I ever get the energy but that will be my next appointment. To be perfectly honest we all have to take control of what our doctors do for us

Thanks for your insights Bernie. Prednisone is the dreaded steroid. I've had to have 'way too much' of it for various aliments and it DOES take forever for the bloat and weight to come down. Mine is starting to barely inch down. Over the years I kept getting 'yet another' diagnosis and each one was being treated as it's own thing (ie: GERD, asthma, sinusitis, etc) However, it does seem that we, here, have many of the same 'ailments' and I'm now finding out that they are a part of FM. What happened to the old family doctor that took care of you as a whole person and not just in pieces!

Always use your voice when doctors prescribe medications. Ask questions about side effects and effects when taken with your other meds. Steroids do cause weight gain but managing the dosage can help that. Can you do exercises that are gentle on the body like simple stretching or perhaps Tai Chi? Finding balance is a process. Stay encouraged.

Just as frustrated as you. Also asked doctor why I couldn't lose weight. He said with all the medicine I was on and because I'd gone through menipause I had little chance of ever loosing weight but that I should keep working at is because I'd be healthier. I went out and had an ice cream cone!

Often the meds that help are a bit like poison. I just tell my docs that although some meds are supposed to work the side affects are a greater concern than the help they are supposed to give. Always do your homework on medicine. I do take some meds but use more alternative options like massage therapy, breathing techniques, CBD oil which is legal in all states and does not contain THC. I use the organic and non GMO brand. Outside of FM I have other health conditions so I work hard to gently exercise regularly, stay active and moving again in a manner that does no harm and surround myself with supportive, positive people. I do use prednisone on occasion but not often, only when inflammation is super bad. It is always low dose and for short periods. I haven't had significant weight gain (a pound or 2) during taking it but I've always been on the thin side and I long ago gut back on carbs (although bread forever temps me). I encourage you to always voice your concerns to your medical team so you can work together for the best results :) Be well, Be Happy.... Shalom!
