Members responded to concerns about unusual rib pain and visible asymmetry by sharing their own experiences with similar symptoms, with several identifying costochondritis as a possible cause and describing it as inflammation of the cartilage connecting ribs to the spine that can feel like crushing or twisting sensations. Many members offered practical comfort strategies including alternating heat and ice, using anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen or Aleve, and sleeping propped up on pillows rather than lying flat to ease breathing and reduce pain. A recurring theme was the importance of following up with a doctor if symptoms persist or worsen, especially given the severity described, while also acknowledging that X-rays may not always reveal the underlying issue.

My ribs and chest are often painful at night but I have found that propping up with pillows is most comfortable and easier to breath deep and relax. Also on the meds I take Aleve and at night there is Aleve pm and it seems to help.

You might be suffering from a condition called Costochondritis. An inflammation of the cartilage that connects the ribs to the spine.

When I get it it feels like my ribs are being crushed at the front and being ripped from my spine at the back.

An X-ray won't show anything so it is rarely properly diagnosed.

There's no real treatment for it other than alternative heat pads and ice packs anti inflammatories and rest. I found propped up on pillows rather than upright or lying flat gave best ease until it passes

Hope this helps and sending gentle hugs xx

I feel like my rib is colapsed..when u feel the one side it is flat like..I can't sit up..and it feels twisted..laying down is hard to..my husband felt it and he says it feels weird..and he's usually thinking I will b fine..but he was kind of worried..I'm always short of breath so that seems normal to me..

I'm sorry you feel so bad. If you can take some deep breaths and try to relax, that will help the pain at least a little. By the way, ibuprofen isn't that good with fibro pain, generally. But you can try taking a bigger dose. I think the prescription dose is 2400 mg a day. I would check that number online at WebMD, though.

The thing about that is your stomach might get upset. And digestive stuff, GERD, IBS, those also come with fibro.

By the way, if you aren't thrilled with prescription pain meds, I know of a couple of relaxing herbs that are helpful and LEGAL.
