I was just recently diagnosed and am the only one in my family with fibro. I was told fibro is usually genetic. Anyone else the only one? Thoughts on genetics?
Hi ladies, NO I,ve never been told fibro is genetic, I am an NHS nurse and I often did extra shifts in out patients with orthopods and rheumatology, I listened intently to what people present with and often picked up tips from the various consultants and where patients were referred. In my area (Manchester) Hydrotherapy and acupuncture have been the answer, 2 consultants told many sufferers that pain relief is not the answer for every fibro sufferer, physical activity in water is good.
The reason it's is being considered genetic, is probably due to mutations in the gene code from chemicals, etc. No one else in my family has it. However, I have 3 autoimmune diseases, FIBRO, HYPOTHYROIDISM ( started as Graves) and now, Diabetes 2. The trifecta. It's hard some days to just go through the motions. Fibro has been linked to childhood abuse, and depression. My doctor says it's the outward sign or all the things that had to be hidden as a child. The depression is self loathing pushing inward, the fibro is the realease of the pain from all the cortisol.
There is a genetic component--just like almost everything. I am the only person who's been diagnosed in my family (but then again, my family is extremely small and has few women). I believe my mom and grandmother could have fibro but have never been diagnosed.
I personally believe in the idea that fibro occurs when a genetic predisposition is triggered by a physically and/or emotionally traumatic event.
And a brother my oldest has fibromialgia also.
I have three sisters one with lupus and two with fibromialgia and my mother rip had fibromialgia also. It is genetic!
