Members overwhelmingly reassured someone worried that filing for Social Security disability might result in losing custody of their children, with the unanimous consensus being that disability status has no connection to parental fitness and that children are only removed in cases of proven abuse or severe neglect. Several members shared their own experiences as parents on disability, explaining that not only did they keep their children, but they also received additional financial support for them, and they encouraged persistence through the denial and appeal process, which many described as standard and intentionally discouraging. A recurring theme was the importance of documenting all symptoms with doctors, considering free legal aid or consulting a disability lawyer who only gets paid if you win, and remembering that being disabled does not mean being an unfit parent.

I wouldn't worry they will not take your kids. You will get money also to help with them. If they don't take kids away from abusive, drug addicts, etc. they won't anyone on disability. they have to prove you really on fit. And I mean really unfit. Have ppl I know who cannot get their kids from other parent d/t they are clothed, roof over their head, et food. And let me tell you kids can go into therapy et tell what's going on et the crap they eat et the other parent cannot do a thing about it:( So don't worry. God bless et hugs your way.

Yeah I have 3kids. I have a hard time keeping up. It shouldn't be a issue. I asked myself that question when I filed for disability
