Does anyone else dread taking a shower? By the time I'm done I have to rest before even thinking of the chore of extremely thick hair.

Members opened up about the exhausting reality of showering with chronic illness, with many describing the physical toll of standing, washing thick or long hair, and needing to rest or even nap afterward. Several members shared practical strategies that have helped them conserve energy, including using shower chairs or benches, switching to nighttime baths followed by morning dry shampoo, washing hair less frequently, ending showers with cool water to regulate body temperature, and keeping hair shorter or wearing hats to reduce styling demands. A recurring theme was the difficult choice between washing their whole body or just their hair, the guilt around skipping showers, and the relief of knowing they are not alone in finding this basic task so draining.

I have a shower stool so that I can sit while I shower. I find that it does relieve some of the strain. I also drink cold water as soon as I get out. For some reason, I feel dehydrated after a shower.

I have recently switched my shower routine and it seems to be working for me. I take a bath at night and soak for as long as I can. Then take a quick shower to wash my hair. It IS exhausting, but since it's right before bed I can just go to sleep. In the morning I have been using "dry shampoo" spray to fix my hair. I used to dread the shower process but this small change has helped a lot!

I hate it. I have a bench that fits over the edge of the tub. When my parents built the suite on the side of the house for me they put a handicapped shower. no rim flat that drains to the center. I still use a shower chair that I sit on to wash my hair(not thick). I use the bench I used in the tub to sit on when I get out of the shower because I am so tired I have to sit or fall.
