I just read about the vagus nerve and it sounds like things that most of already know such as meditation and humming help vagal tone, which is the difference between the heart rate while inhaling and while exhaling. I have heard of the vagus nerve through my Reiki, Reflexology and Acupuncture research...although not this treatment specifically. I think that the past research makes sense...and I've known someone with a VNS being used to treat his severe medication-resistant depression. It certainly seemed to provide some relief from a depression standpoint. It appears that the VNS is NOT a currently approved treatment for anything other than epilepsy and depression....and even then insurance doesn't cover for depression. I certainly think the research looks "promising" but it may be a long time before it is approved for pain...not to mention the risks associated with that type of surgery. There are other alternatives being studied in Europe based on this theory though...and there are some that are trying to use a TENS unit on areas of the ear as a means of trying to stimulate the vagus nerve...I would be interested to know if there has been success for Fibro with the TENS...that would be more my speed than surgery right now. Take Care!!
I use my ten's unit on my lower back when it hurts so bad that I can't hardly walk. I even sleep with it on I have had fibro since I was in my early 20s
I might try my Tens machine then! :-) xx
It is one of 12 cranial nerves, it runs from the brain stem through organs to the stomach. Heart and lungs are regulated by it.
