Hi

Has anyone completed this at all. I am currently in theropy once a week and my GP thinks this will really help. My main issue is my theropist keeps talking about the pain not being real and all in my brain and to a degree i get what she means. But she is talking about pushing myself to let my brain know that their is no real pain. But when im a heap on the floor and cant walk, that pain is mighty real.

Members strongly validated someone's frustration with a therapist who minimized fibromyalgia pain as psychological, with an overwhelming consensus that the pain is very real and deserves to be treated as such. Many members urged finding a new therapist who understands fibromyalgia, with several sharing their own positive experiences working with care teams that acknowledge the condition's legitimacy while using mindfulness or CBT as coping tools rather than dismissing physical symptoms. A recurring theme was that pushing through severe pain is dangerous rather than therapeutic, and that the right therapist should meet you where you are, validate your reality, and work collaboratively with medical providers who recognize fibromyalgia as a genuine physical illness.

i had to stop seeing my therapist, cus i was close to losing my temper with her, she treated me like a 5 year old and kept telling me she understood and that depression was the route cause and maybe the pain was my body's way of coping, if its all in our heads how come we bruise so easily and take ages to recover, some people like to pretend to understand rather than admitting they havent got a clue.

Kminty,
With the back, I just had to have back surgery 4weeks ago, I would go numb and fall... Come to find out that I had so much arthritis on facet joints and some wrapped around a ligament strangling the sciatic nerve, along with the arthritis causing the bulging disc... We know our bodies and getting someone to listen is hard ..just try to get a physician to hear you out..

I agree switch therapists if that is possible. It is NOT in your head. I do believe it is true that we can use our mind to control our pain to some degree. (I have learned mindfulness techniques which have helped me to deal with the pain at times) However I believe that this is phenomenon is true of ANY physical illness, and not specific to fibro. We deserve the same treatment as people with any other physical problems.

I would suggest you see a different therapist. It is not good for you to be treated like it's "all in your head." A good therapist will start where you are, recognize that your pain is real, and try to help you find ways to cope that are HEALTHY and which honor your experience.

I mean i am lucky my GP is fully convinced fibro is real and was glad i got diagnosed at the hospital. Not sure if he has placed hope in theropy along with my meds. Healthy mind healthy body and all that jazz.
