Can employers in the uk sack you due to time of because of fibro flares? I've had to take the odd day off here and there but lately have been struggling with it due to cold wet weather, any advice greatfully received xx

Members shared their experiences navigating job security while managing fibromyalgia flare-ups in the UK, with several confirming that employers cannot legally dismiss someone for a recognized disability like fibromyalgia under the Equality Act, though some cautioned that protections depend on contract terms, length of employment, and whether proper documentation is in place. Many members described personal struggles with losing jobs or facing pressure to resign despite legal protections, while others emphasized the importance of contacting ACAS for support, joining a union, requesting reasonable accommodations like adjusted hours or work-from-home arrangements, and obtaining medical documentation to strengthen their case. A recurring theme was the critical role of having an understanding employer who genuinely accommodates the condition, as even with legal protections in place, workplace culture and management attitudes can make all the difference between keeping a job and being pushed out.

Hi Sian I was a P.A. and I kept losing time off work because I was soo tired (I put it down to Grief Reaction and Shock after my son was killed in Afghanistan) but eventually I was made redundant. I now work in light assembly. I started to lose time and then had a severe bout of flu where I was off for 3 weeks. I was so worried as I need some money coming in. Luckily the work nurse knew about Fibromyalgia and actually said I couldn't work full time and that I could only work maximum 6 hours a day and 5 on a Friday. They understand some days I need to go home as I'm too tired. I guess I'm saying that if you get an understanding employer then fingers crossed you'll be okay. it's such a worry isn't it. I've also tried for PIP benefit which is not means tested to make up my money but as of now it's going to Court. Good luck xx

It's a tough question. They can call absence reviews where they should offer you alternative arrangements is possible, eg working from home or adjusted hours. Fibro is mentioned in the Equality Act, so you can can wave that around. Speak to your Union.
I went through the process, but they made my life so difficult I decided to resign.

I was laid off work 11yrs ago but to be honest my job was killing me and i was happy with the decision as i had a very heavy job and i was getting weaker and weaker by the week. I am not sure of the rules but Fibromyalgia is a newly recognised illness here in the uk and lots of people have not heard of it
