well, prebiotics are especially important. You are right it does comedown to what works for you personally.
For me, I've tried high fiber, low sugar...etc but find I can be fine on all of that for long periods, or have episodes while trying such restrictions. Fiber seems to make a diff, so I supplement with things like benefiber, sugar is bad all around but I haven't had much luck cutting it out. Caffeinated beverages and chocolate do not seem to agree with me. Hope this may help you. Feels like an individual toss up at times depending on the frequency and severity of ones symptoms.

Generally it is low fiber or residue when flaring and once flare is over gradually incorporate a high fiber diet
