Five years ago I started a cough after my first bad flair up. It started as a slight irritating cough and slowly developed into a very annoying all the time cough. It comes at any time. Now it is heavy and sometimes I become hoarse when I talk. I have coughed to the point of reflux gagging which is unpleasant in itself but in public very uncomfortable. Also to the point of not being able to breath like an asthma attack. I have been to 2 ENT doctors, lung specialist, lung surgeon as they… read more

Members shared their experiences with persistent, undiagnosed coughs, with many pointing to lisinopril (a blood pressure medication) as a well-known culprit that caused chronic coughing in several people they knew, which resolved after stopping the drug. Several members also mentioned other potential causes they had personally dealt with, including COPD, thyroid issues or goiters causing throat irritation, and certain anti-anxiety medications that can trigger coughing as a side effect. A recurring theme was the frustration of endless testing and specialist visits without clear answers, alongside encouragement to keep investigating medication side effects and underlying conditions like thyroid problems that might be overlooked.

I can't say that your cough is from lisinopril but it is a documented side effect. My husband developed a cough after starting it but it eventually disapated.my doctor just took me off of it.

Just a thought. Has anyone checked your thyroid? Is there possibly a goiter, or swelling that is causing swelling and irritation.

Another thought; what medications are you on? That can be a side affect, or reaction.

Generally I have chest pain around the sternum, feeling the lift and release of every breath. One of my meds, an anti anxiety, causes coughing. It's much, much worse at night. If my dose is increased the coughing subsides for awhile but then returns again. Believe in my case it's chemical dependency. I now refuse increasing the dosage and tough it out as other anti anxiety meds have not worked for my anxiety.
