Amitriptyline
A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

Anyone tried or is taking Amitriptyline? Pros/Cons. Was thinking about trying it, if so what is a good starting dose to avoid side effects.

Jmalone75...if you et your MD want to try it it doesn't hurt just to try. Need to remember medications work diff. on everyone. If doesn't work or side effects get to you then your MD can wean you off et try you on something else. I've been a guinea pig for the last 15+ yr between migraine medications et now fibro et I have gone thru a lot of them for migraines that never worked from BP meds, to seizure medications, et cannot tell you how many migraine meds alone to take them away et they do not work on me:( My pt. what can it hurt?

Each person is different but from reading other comments it seems it has more cons than pros.

My doctor started me on 10mg, I didn't get any pain relief but it helped me fall asleep for a few hours for the first week or two.

I then gained 20lbs within 2 & a half months, got quite bad acne which I have never suffered from in my life.

I was taken off it back in April & still struggling to lose the weight & clear the acne.

Horrid medication for me personally.

I found it helped me to sleep and dulled my pain which made me feel more like a normal person. Didn't notice any of the side effects as fibro already caused most of them x

My doctor started me on it a few weeks ago and wants me to titrate up every few days. I started at 10mg and am currently at 50mg. No hangover feeling at all, and sleep is very slightly improved....

I have been on 50mg of this for 8 years now they did help me at first but the side effects don't seem worth it but I'm used to them they will be different for each person x
