Members discussed the risks of combining 5HTP (a dietary supplement that increases serotonin) with Prozac or other SSRIs, with the overwhelming consensus being that taking both together can lead to a dangerous condition called serotonin syndrome, which causes severe illness, confusion, and disorientation. Several members shared their own experiences, with one successfully using 5HTP while weaning off Effexor, another experiencing debilitating symptoms from combining 5HTP with Paxil, and others emphasizing the importance of consulting a pharmacist or doctor before combining these treatments. A recurring theme was frustration that doctors prescribe SSRIs without first testing serotonin levels, though one member explained that neurotransmitter function is more complex than simple blood levels and mentioned a newer genetic test that can predict how the body will metabolize certain medications.

Oh boy I hate 5htp with a passion. Took it with Paxil for a while and it made me unable to function. I believe they call it "serotonin syndrome"- both Prozac and 5htp are supposed to increase your level of serotonin. If your serotonin level gets too high, you can become very ill. Every person is different so you might do fine to take both but some people won't. Ask your pharmacist and work closely with your doc to figure out if this something that might help you and then proceed with caution and keep your doc updated if so.

You can always check with your pharmacist. They know more about the drugs and the interactions that what your doctor does, at least usually. Try using s/he for your drug questions.

5HTP is a dietary supplement made from seeds of the African plant Griffonia Simplicifolia. It helps with serotonin levels so aids sleep, fatigue, mood.
