I was never a back sleeper. I always fell asleep on my left side and then sometimes during the night I would turn to my right side. I can't sleep on my sides anymore because either that side hurts very badly after a short time or goes numb.

Thanks for asking this question as for many years I had the same issue and when I told the doctors I didn't think that they believed me. Two years ago I found an answer as my psychiatrist who manages my psychoactive drugs for Fibro prescribed Straterra as he had success in treating others with Fibropain or migraines with it. It works! Straterra normally prescribed for ADHD works for that horrid nerve pain! Occasionally I'll get that pain but not nearly as bad.
Now getting a doctor to prescribe Strattera for off label use is a different story. They can prescribe it for brain fog..
@A MyFibroTeam Member I also get my best sleep in the morning and I too can't go back to sleep if I get awoken, unfortunately i live with very rude roommates that are very loud. I do everything that I can to block any outside noise by using a sound machine (I like the cricket sound setting) and I also run a fan. I have tried ear plugs, but they always fall out and I can hear the sound of my own breathing, which I don't like. Fibro leaves no part of our lives untouched, it affects every single aspect. Things that other people take for granted are taken away from us. We have to plan out every little thing that we do and most of the time no matter how much we try to plan or prepare in the end even our best laid plans become null and void because our pain dictates what we can or can do. I hope that made sense because I think I was going around in circles trying to get my thoughts across (thanks fibro fog). Let me sum it up by saying FIBROMYALGIA SUCKS!
I used to have a Temperpidic mattress and it was wonderful but I had to sell pretty much everything that I owned and then I was sleeping on my son's old futon an even with a gel foam topper was pure torture to sleep on, I was sleeping, or should I say trying to sleep, on that for about a year. After that a friend of mine was put in the unfortunate position of having to sell all of her deceased grandmothers possessions and. Was able to purchase bed that was in the guest room for very cheap. It is a pretty soft bed but I still have to make my 'bird best' of pillows and sleep on my back and I also have to be propped up because of acid reflux and a failed neck surgery. I want so badly just to be able to sleep on my side sometimes but hey it is what it is. We all have to figure out how to do things in new ways because Fibromyalgia is in complete control of everything, what we do and how and when we do everything. I'm praying that my fibro family finds rest. Gentle hugs to all of you.
@A MyFibroTeam Member don't discount medicine reactions too. if you take Lisinopril it will cause a dry cough that won't go away. I can't sleep on my back, my boobs are too big and they crush my chest....but it does hurt to sleep on my sides....I have to keep switching all night to get comfortable again.
I have struggled with side sleeping for years but have some relief now thanks to Physical Therapy. My therapist stretches my IT band, hip and low back area and massages my legs. After, I get wrapped in heat packs. It is quite a process but helps me with pain management. The only other option I found that helps is pain pills. I like the PT better than pain meds...but it costs a lot more and takes more time. PT has been a huge help!
