Saint Clair, PA

I was diagnosed with uveitis in my right eye around New Years. My eye specialist ran a ton of blood work and test along with X-rays of my hips, back. He found I have an auto immune disease. He referred me to a rhumetologist. She diagnosed me with RA. She prescribed methotrexate but I never started taking it. She was telling me some things I need to watch for while taking it. What I can do and cannot do. It scared me. I did some research on it and I def am not taking this med. I told her… read more

@A MyFibroTeam Member. I took my methotrexate on Saturday and felt a bit nauseated and muscle aches on Sunday. Then I was ok for the week. With lab work 1 x a month they do keep close eye and if anything is different they will adjust the dosage. I started taking Biotin 5000mcg a day. That did help with the hair loss. Good luck.....

@A MyFibroTeam Member My journey with everything started with the eye symptoms. They put me on mega dosage of Advil and then it caused GI issues. The eye Md said lets get you to see RA MD. I did and they could not determine if I had RA but they put me on methotrexate and it cleared my eye and I was pain free ( in my eye). I was scared also. Maybe you would only need methotrexate for a short duration? They do monitor your labs closely like every month. Just a thought...good luck

I am right there with you @A MyFibroTeam Member. I am afraid of all the DMARD and Biologic medications too. This is scary stuff. Which is why I haven't been back to a rheumy in 11 years. Last time I went they put me on plaquinel, I had bad visual side effects and never went back. With the methotrexate Mom didn't take ibuprofen, but took Meclomen which is another NSAID. I wonder if another NSAID could be used in conjunction for you too. I am sure no one would want things to get worse for you, but it could make it better. Can you ask the doctor if there is another drug that isn't as scary or has a more managable list of side effercts? Perhaps Azulfidine? I am praying you find the right combo for you.

My mom took it once a week for 30 years. It was the only drug that even touched her RA. The nausea and flu like symptoms were generally only on the days that she took it. She had some hair thinning, but she was on a ton of other things with it that caused the same symptoms. They do have it by injection that you can give to yourself at home. That might be another option that has fewer side effects. That is what I would like to do if/when I have to start it myself. I am going back to the rheumy in July with anticipation of him finding more than I already know about currently. I hope you can find the right thing that works for you.
