Members offered guidance to someone wondering when to apply for disability with fibromyalgia, epilepsy, asthma, and chronic migraines, with the clear consensus being to start the process sooner rather than later since approval often takes a year or more and nearly always involves an initial denial. Several members strongly recommended hiring a disability attorney immediately to navigate the paperwork and appeals, with specific praise for lawyers who guide clients through every step, help find affordable doctors, and connect them to community resources. A recurring theme was the importance of building a support system, stashing funds if possible, using all available medical documentation, and applying in person at the Social Security office to strengthen the case.

Plan ahead. It's a long, drawn-out process. So prepare for it first and expect a year minimum to get all the paperwork, etc... Praying you receive help! You can always change your mind about going on it but with the length of time involved I'd start sooner than later. I know they say fibro isn't degenerative but I'm not sold on that notion. Mine seems to get worse the longer I've had it. That being said, a year is a long time and a lot can happen. I waited to long for help. My advice...sooner the better!

You can apply for SSDI with the help of an attorney who specializes in disability law. I was terminated from my job due to my disability. I went on unemployment. I was approved for SSDI on my first try six months later. I had to be unable to work for six months in order for SSDI to start. SSDI uses your records from what you earned the previous three years. Good luck!
