Members shared a wide range of alternative pain management strategies for someone allergic to opiates, with many describing multi-layered approaches that combine medications like Cymbalta, gabapentin, tizanidine, and muscle relaxers with non-pharmaceutical options. Several members highlighted practical remedies including homemade turmeric-ginger-black pepper capsules (noting that black pepper increases turmeric absorption by 4000%), fish oil for joint pain, arthritis-strength Tylenol, topical treatments like Icy Hot, and physical tools such as heat, ice, massage, and TENS units. A recurring theme was the challenge of finding compassionate pain doctors who treat patients with respect rather than suspicion, along with the hard-won realization that sometimes less conventional combinations provide better quality of life than opioids alone.

I am sensitive to most pain relievers. I use a combination of turmeric/ginger capsules that I make. I add a dash of pepper to the mix because it intensifies the turmeric absorption. I use EFAs (fish oil) for joint pain. Other herbs and supplements.

I also take Meloxicam, Cymbalta, Gabapentin, and tizanidine, so I am limited to what else I can take. I did narcotics for 15 years. They hurt more than helped me, I developed a condition called Chronic pain syndrome. My brain developed more pain receptors from the narcotic. A pain doctor developed my current strategy. I now have less pain than while on the narcotics. The tylenol helps on the bad days.

I am also allergic or sensitive to any and all pain relievers, I will when desperate take my Norco with 3 different antihistamines but I can't do that more then twice before it is an issue. I rely mostly on heat, ice, message, my tens unit and muscle relaxers. I wish I had a better answer. I did try a new one Nucynta, when I had knee surgery. My doc said it wasn't an opiate. I only could tolerate it for 4 days before the itching began again.
