Members discussed which doctors treat fibromyalgia, with rheumatologists and neurologists mentioned most often as part of a care team. Several members shared that finding good specialists is a major challenge, noting long wait times, doctors who refuse fibromyalgia patients, and limited options in many areas. A recurring theme was the importance of self-advocacy, working with an open-minded primary care doctor, and repeating labs over several months to get a clearer diagnosis.

Rheumatologist…I’ve had three in last 20 years. But I can’t tolerate the medications they put me on. So manage okish with Tylenol Arthritis and cbd and Infrared heatpad.

I have a rheumatologist that treats me for my fibromyalgia. He is great. I love my doctor. I also have a neurologist too that I’m fortunate is wonderful also. My neurologist, I started seeing after my first car accident which he did all my MRIs of my brain and my back as well as a EEG. My rheumatologist keeps up with all my labs that he repeats every 3-4 months and is always trying different medications that I can take due to limited ones because of my blood thinner.

Great question! Several types of doctors can be involved in managing fibromyalgia. The most common starting point is a primary care provider (your regular doctor), who may then refer you to a specialist.

Great question! Several types of doctors can be involved in managing fibromyalgia. The most common starting point is a primary care provider (your regular doctor), who may then refer you to a specialist.

A rheumatologist is often the go-to specialist. They focus on conditions affecting muscles, joints, and the immune system, making them well-suited to diagnose and manage fibromyalgia. As for neurologists — since fibromyalgia is a neurological condition that affects how the brain and nervous system process pain, a neurologist *can* be helpful, particularly if nerve-related symptoms like numbness or tingling are prominent.

Beyond that, a well-rounded care team might also include:

- Pain management specialists — for targeted pain relief strategies
- Mental health professionals — for cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and stress management
- Physical therapists — to help with movement, flexibility, and pain tolerance
- Dietitians — for nutritional guidance that may help reduce symptoms

Many MyFibroTeam members find that building a trusted team of doctors across different specialties gives them the best overall support. As one MyFibroTeam member shared, finding doctors who truly listen and work with you — rather than against you — can make all the difference.

I only see my Rheumatologist every six months as well, common. There is a huge lack of Rheumatologists, Neurologists in the US. Lack of research funding is horrific. But, there are still breakthroughs daily in medicine. A possible new vaccine for Melanoma that has a 44% success rate so far. Huge, because these help in vaccines for cancer all forms. Michael J Fox Foundation has new research into why there is Parkinson’s, or neurodegenerative diseases.🦋🙏
