Why did your fibromyalgia symptoms suddenly worsen and spread?
It's understandable to feel confused when fibromyalgia symptoms intensify unexpectedly. Your experience with trauma from construction work and repetitive weight lifting could have triggered your initial symptoms, as physical trauma and repetitive injuries are known factors in fibromyalgia development.
The worsening and spreading of symptoms is actually a common pattern with fibromyalgia. Many members on MyFibroTeam share similar experiences. One member noted, "What throws me off is I have had fibro for 10 years, the fatigue was never this bad, even when I had flare-ups those first two years." Another asked, "Does anyone else feel that their fibro symptoms have gotten progressively worse over the years?"
Several factors might explain why symptoms can worsen over time:
- Fibromyalgia is likely a disease of the central nervous system, and recent research shows increased inflammation in brain tissue in people with fibromyalgia
- Additional physical or emotional stressors can trigger flare-ups or worsen existing symptoms
- Sleep disturbances, which are common with fibromyalgia, may actually contribute to worsening pain and fatigue
- The condition can fluctuate naturally, with symptoms going up and down
It's important to talk with your doctor about your worsening symptoms. They can help adjust your treatment plan and explore whether lifestyle modifications might help manage the progression.

Mine developed from emotional trauma…when first, my mother died, then later when my son died. It seems to come and go…now it’s more severe, unfortunately.

When I was first diagnosed with fibromyalgia over 20 years ago this is what my rheumatologist told me. He said I'm not going to tell you it won't get worse because it will. And he definitely told me the truth. It does get worse but all you can do is take one day at a time. For me a good day is when I don't ache so bad I want to cry. The daily headache, numbness and burning sensation across the shoulders I count as a good day. And in the last 6 months my hearing has gotten over sensitive to certain sounds like a dog barking which usually brings on a migraine which totally ducks. God bless!
