Can fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome cause paralysis?

Based on current understanding, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) don't typically cause actual paralysis. However, they can cause symptoms that might feel similar or concerning.

Fibromyalgia is a central nervous system disorder that causes widespread pain, fatigue, sleep problems, and cognitive difficulties like brain fog. CFS often occurs alongside fibromyalgia and can cause severe fatigue and what's called orthostatic intolerance - feeling faint when standing or sitting upright because not enough blood reaches the brain and heart.

These conditions can make you feel extremely weak, exhausted, or have difficulty moving, but this isn't the same as true paralysis where you lose the ability to move muscles. The severe fatigue and pain can sometimes make movement feel nearly impossible, which might be what you're experiencing.

If you're having sudden weakness or inability to move parts of your body, it's important to seek immediate medical attention to rule out other serious conditions. A healthcare provider can help determine if what you're experiencing is related to fibromyalgia/CFS or if something else needs to be addressed.

I know that feeling. I was bed bound for 7 months at the beginning, over 40 years ago. But after those 7 months, I gradually got better. Eventually went back to work, started walking, then hiking, then mountain biking. As I've aged and had more stress from caregiving, I've gotten worse again and have to be very gentle on my body, my schedule, and have to rest a lot more. But there is always hope!
