A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

My husband and I are planning to start a family soon, and I am really nervous about how fibro will impact my pregnancy and my ability to care for an infant. With pregnancy, I’m most concerned about pain, especially my knees, hips, and lower back, which are already major pain points for me. But when it comes to caring for a baby, I’m more worried about fatigue and exhaustion. I’m already so tired, and I’m concerned that getting significantly less sleep caring for a baby will push me past what I… read more

I had my baby at 25 years old. It wasn’t easy, but I did it. . I didn’t have a support system. I lived far away from my family ,most of the time. If you have a good support system, it makes all the difference in the world. And it depends on how badly you want to have a child. I didn’t plan on having my daughter, but I’m so glad that I did. I can’t imagine life without her. 💜

How will fibromyalgia impact pregnancy and caring for an infant?

Your concerns about pain and fatigue are completely valid. Many people with fibromyalgia worry about how pregnancy and caring for a newborn will affect their symptoms, especially when you're already managing significant pain and exhaustion.

While the search results don't specifically address pregnancy with fibromyalgia, they do highlight that fatigue and sleep issues are major challenges for people living with this condition. Sleep deprivation from caring for an infant could potentially intensify your fibromyalgia symptoms, including pain and fatigue.

Here are some considerations:

- Talk with your healthcare provider about managing fibromyalgia during pregnancy and postpartum
- Discuss which medications are safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Plan ahead for extra support after the baby arrives (partner help, family, friends)
- Set realistic expectations with your husband about sharing nighttime duties
- Consider ways to minimize physical strain (using a stroller instead of constantly carrying, setting up nursing/feeding stations on each floor)

Remember that setting boundaries and asking for help isn't a weakness—it's essential self-care. A MyFibroTeam member shared that "when you need to shut down and recharge, no explanation is required other than this is what you need to do."

Having an honest conversation with your doctor about your specific concerns will help you create a plan that works for your situation.
