I realize this is a chronic condition with no complete relief possible, but what did a rheumatologist do, or are there good reasons not to consult one? Thanks.

I’ve had two good rheumatologists. But I’m too sensitive to the fibromyalgia drugs and anti inflammatories. So not a lot of help for me, except for ruling out things. In common sense, suggestions, like get a housekeeper and exercise and stretching . I had to figure out food sensitivity through a Naturopath. It’s good to have rhumetologist run a blood work panel to rule out other rheumalogical conditions .

The rheumatologist that diagnosed me does not treat fibromyalgia and told me most rheumatologists don't treat it because it is not considered a inflammatory condition. That was tears ago, so it might have changed.

In my experience, it really depends on the individual doctor and not so much their field of study. Though rheumatologists and neurologists can often be your best bet.

You can also look for someone who specializes in fibromyalgia. Bigger cities are more likely to have them.

My sister was sent to the Mayo Clinic in FL for fibromyalgia, where she took a course and they developed a plan for her. She said it’s been magical for her.

I’ve got all her course work, all pretty routine stuff.

I also know of a Fibromyalgia clinic in Atlanta.

I know they use gabapentin, Lyrica cymbalta. Sometimes it is necessary to see the rheumatologist to get a diagnosis.

What are the pros and cons of seeing a rheumatologist for fibromyalgia, and how specifically can they help?

Rheumatologists specialize in conditions affecting muscles, joints, and the immune system, making them well-suited to diagnose and treat fibromyalgia. Here are some key benefits and considerations:

Pros of seeing a rheumatologist:

- They can provide an accurate diagnosis by ruling out other conditions and confirming fibromyalgia (which requires widespread pain lasting at least three months)
- They can develop a comprehensive treatment plan that may include medications for pain management
- They work alongside other specialists to address multiple symptoms
- They understand the physical aspects of fibromyalgia and can monitor your condition over time

What they typically do:

- Examine your body and ask detailed questions about your symptoms and their duration
- May adjust medications or treatment plans based on your response
- Can refer you to other specialists like physical therapists or mental health professionals for cognitive behavioral therapy to help manage stress, depression, and emotional symptoms

Considerations:

While rheumatologists are valuable for diagnosis and medical management, it's worth noting that current fibromyalgia treatments rarely provide complete relief. Treatment often focuses on pain management combined with lifestyle changes, stress reduction, and complementary approaches like physical therapy.

If you're struggling with fibromyalgia symptoms, consulting a rheumatologist can be an important step in getting proper care and exploring treatment options.
