Anyone Else Have Severe Difficulty Getting An IV?
A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

I’ve had a dozen surgeries and every single time, getting an IV is horrific. Aside from complications (the catheter can’t go in far enough, vein collapses, hematomas, no viable vein to poke, blood clots after removal) I have a high level of pain with the IV. I can feel the catheter in place, i get a “shock” feeling and severe burning when they push fluids or meds and it just plain hurts. I haven't had the physical complications, but those things hurt a lot and then I can't stop thinking about it and have vivid flashbacks. Get really lightheaded too. It's like a sharp pain that goes right though you.
My guess is sensitive nerves.

I think it's several factors. Age, low thyroid and lower body core temp. I'm usually 96.8 to 97.6. If my temp is 99-Im sick. There seems to be more information on this all the time. I just make sure to hydrate ALOT, but even that doesn't always help. This last phlebotomist was so sweet. Was worried about hurting me. I told her "trust me, I can take the pain. You're ATTITUDE is refreshing!". 3 sticks and she had success. I find people with Fibromyalgia do the comforting of staff, more than the other way around. We KNOW how difficult our bodies can be!! I just had blood draw (attempt) on Friday. Vein collapsed-no other veins to get blood from. Returned this Wed- took 3 tries, using a butterfly needle. The blood came into tube at a drop per beat of my heart!! I am always hard to get blood from. Always!!
