I've recently read that thickened water can help you drink liquids if you have difficulty drinking. Eating softer foods helps too. If it's really significant, as in risk of choking or you're not getting enough to eat and drink, you should definitely see a doctor about this. There's physical therapy to help strengthen your muscles and teach you how to more safely swallow things.
True about bread . I have to toast it and take small bites. I always have soup or salad for lunch, not sandwiches. Rice crackers with the soup.
Breads, especially cornbread, or heavy breads, are the worst for me. Since using my pressure cooker to cook most meats, they usually are not a problem.
Has anyone noticed how fast many people eat? Maybe it's me, and fear of choking, but, I see them often, hardly chewing at all.
I know when I’m eating and I think about swallowing it makes it harder to swallow and it doesn’t happen naturally. But when I’m distracted I swallow fine. I know it’s a lot harder said than done, but one of the best things it to try not to think about it. Maybe if the weather is ok eat outside as there’s more distractions, or have the radio/tv on?
Constance,
It can be due to GERD and Gastritis. I have both, I also have a nodule at base of my throat on my thyroid, it’s benign so it’s not removed. I get pills stuck there. Too many carbs will do it, My throat is dry a lot due to my lung disease, so that contributes too. Dry meats I have a problem with . I’ve switched from chicken breasts to chicken thighs.
