Does Fibromyalgia Cause More Pain After Surgery?
A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

I just found out I have a small mass of papillary cancer in my breast. I will undergo a lumpectomy as soon as I can get it scheduled. I wanted to know if anyone else has had more fibro pain or if surgery caused a bad flare afterwards.

Advise the anaesthetist that you have fibro and you flare post surgery. They will be able to prescribe something for post surgery and add extra pain relief for when you wake up in recovery. Best of luck with everything

I had surgery on my ankle in November, last year, and cataracts in January and February. I did have more pain in November and December. I don't remember if I had more fibro pain.

I had both my knees replaced four months apart. Oddly I did OK. I don’t think I had extra pain compared to anybody else. They do cut the nerve in your knee to do the surgery so that
might be it? My pain was managed with narcotics initially. Which I pretty much just took a bedtime or before PT sessions. I loved the Toradol in the hospital. That really helped. I’m not really into taking narcotics at all for pain nor do I have an issue with narcotics in terms of addiction. I kept moving post surgery, using my walker or cane and taking walks outside with my husband for safety. I got into the pool as soon as I could when I was able to drive. I go to the YMCA to use the pool and do some water exercises and slow laps! Nothing strenuous. So I’m thinking in my situation that doing as much activity as I was able as I healed was helpful. I also used ice packs on my knees at the surgical sites, which really helped too. So probably depending on the type of surgery you’re having it could have a different outcome too. These days they usually want you up and walking as soon as you can. I think that’s a good thing if possible. I hope things go well for you. The area you’re describing is not a joint or area with a chance of muscle pain or spasming. It’s not one of the trigger points. So I think you have a good chance of not having a flareup if you are able to keep active and out of bed. Some flareups may be caused by an emotional concern if you are worried about the outcome of your surgery. I tend to get more pain in my back if I’m emotionally stressed and maybe you have an area of your body that tends to respond more to your emotions. Garner all the support you can, that will help having a support system. Anything else that you can think of just for your emotional needs will probably help as well. I wish you well and a full recovery.

I have found there is more pain at the surgery site. People without fibro have less pain and for shorter duration.
