Anyone Find A Decent Way To Deal With Extreme Sensitivity To Sound, Lights, And Smells?

A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

I get an instant headache and feel sick when something or someone has a certain scent. I can smell any non-sensitive/fragrance-free laundry detergent a mile away, perfumes, colognes... and don't get me started on air fresheners lol. I also get soooo dizzy from flashing lights and movie/tv show transitions, especially when the camera flips or things get sped up. Noises feel painful and cause irritability a lot too. Anyone else experience this, or find a helpful way to navigate? I feel like an… read more

Members connected deeply over debilitating sensitivities to sounds, lights, and smells, sharing how these symptoms cause headaches, dizziness, nausea, and body pain that disrupt daily life, from neighbors' dryer sheets to phone calls and movie theaters. Several members offered practical tools that have helped them cope, including earplugs for restaurants and sleep, noise-canceling headphones, blue light blocking glasses like Uvex, sleep masks, charcoal odor absorbers in homes and cars, and eliminating scented products wherever possible. A recurring theme was the importance of speaking up about your needs without guilt, setting boundaries like text-only communication, and exploring potential underlying causes such as hyperacusis hearing loss, intracranial hypertension, or gut health issues like SIBO.

Ouch3, I could've written your post. Struggling with neighbors scented dryer sheets and wood burning stove. Loud noises hurt my body too..finally moved out of my noisy neighborhood. But I hear everything! Hard to tune it out. I wear earplugs to bed.( keep a pair in my purse for the restaurants etc.) Sleep mask . My hearing sensitivity got worse in my 60’s, found out I have age related hearing loss. So hearing aids now. I start to perspire if I talk on the telephone, it’s weird. I got vertigo when I went to see the movie the Matrix. I’m careful now with flashing lights.

I have all three of those sensitivities, and it is a challenge. The only real control you can have is within your own home and if you have family living with you, you need their cooperation. Beyond that, there is just the usual ear plugs, noise cancelling head gear, blue light blocking glasses, low lighting. The hearing sensitivity is actually a hearing loss called hyperacusis. That is the one I focus on.
For odors, I keep charcoal odor absorbers in the house and car and that helps somewhat. I limit household chemical and scented/perfumed products as I'm sure you do.

Same. I get carbon from the aquarium department of pet stores and put small amounts in pottery pieces and place them around the house to absorb odours.

Loud noises make me jumpy. I've seen something called "calm" advertised and am considering investing in a pair.

We're very careful where we purchase a house. No oil or propane furnaces or wood stoves nearby.

Every flare I've had results in photophobia (light sensitivity), blurry vision, sound sensitivity, also any chemical odor will make me really sick. I had a bad reaction to a leather conditioner a few months ago and I feel like I still haven't fully recovered.

If you spend any time in a group of people with intracranial hypertension, you'll find most have these same symptoms! So maybe if we reduce pressure of CSF around the brain, the symptoms will improve.

I chatted with someone who said treating SIBO (bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine) resolved their head pressure. I noticed when I fast for a day I feel a lot better. So maybe there's a gut/brain aspect to this.
