How To Treat TMJ?

A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭
Ontario, Canada

For weeks now I have been suffering from TMJ. I went to see the Doctor, and he said yes, you have TMJ, and proceeded to prescribe muscle relaxants which didn't do much.
It's on my left side, excruciatingly painful, shoots pain into my ear, back teeth, and up my temple causing headaches. Doesn't appear to be going away or even getting better. Thanks.😪

Members shared diverse approaches to managing TMJ pain, with many emphasizing the importance of starting with conservative treatments before considering surgery. Several members found relief through therapeutic massage techniques at the jaw joint, chiropractic care with acupressure to release seized muscles, mouth guards to prevent nighttime grinding, and medications like Celebrex or muscle relaxants, while one member described how untreated TMJ progressed to the point of requiring bilateral surgical correction. A recurring theme was the connection between stress, teeth grinding, and TMJ flare-ups, with members encouraging the original poster to work closely with both a dentist and potentially an oral surgeon to find the right combination of treatments.

I have had tmj for about 40 + years. It is usually caused from clenching and grinding your teeth. You might want to get a mouth guard to sleep with. I have been going to the same chiropractic clinic for approximately 30 years now. They use accupressure on the seized up muscles and once the muscle releases they slide my jaw back into position. This lasts for a couple of years if I am not going through a lot of stress. I feel that my chiropractor keeps me walking!

It was an oral surgeon who did them. Yes, most definitely jaw would go out of alignment when sleeping, or awake. Using a mouth guard helps to slow process down, but I left it way too long.

Hope you get all the help you need and pray it works to prevent you having surgery.

I had TMJ in both joints. Got to the point I couldn't open my mouth. Dentist sent me to dental surgeon and ended up having surgery in the hospital with both joints being fixed. That was a good 20 years ago. Past couple of years I have a bit of discomfort but nothing to complain of.

Above suggestions are all great ones and I pray that you find something that helps to make you more comfortable. Surgery as last resort as it is fairly painful and uncomfortable. At least for myself as both were done at same time.
