My wife was just diagnosed with Fibro and we love to travel. She is concerned her travel may have to be curtailed.
Don’t give up new adventures or travel.
We take shorter trips, stop frequently and above sll be flexable. On a seven hour road trip i just hit a wall and could not go on after only two hours. We stopped in a little town we had alwsys just driven through in the past. Found a simple hotel that ended up having a beautiful tropical indoor pool. It was heavenly and eased the painful muscles. We wslked across the street to an unknown Italian restaurant. OMG it was fabulous.
We now go there whenever we are in the area.
To quote my 95 year old aunt who had the worst sense of direction her entire life. She never considered herself lost(which she usually was) she was just one wrong turn away from a new adventure.
Learn to travel differently and you will have a great time.
Traveling is hard and requires planning. Your goal is to arrive at your destination not wiped out.
What I found works best for me.
1)Use the wheel chair service at the airport.
2) Check all bags. Lugging a carry-on and lifting it to the overhead is not good.
3) Do direct flights as much as possible. Long layovers will kill you.
4) Follow the advice of prior posts about stretching and moving.
5) when you arrive make sure you have a quiet place to rest for a few hours.
Don’t plan on hitting the ground running, you will just hit the ground.
Stop and stretch and walk. We always walk around yhe rest areas just to move. Go potty and get water to drink.
Its easier when we drive because we can go at our own pace. If you fly and take pain meds, make sure you have them with you on the plane. I always take an extra one before we get on the plane and do some leg stretches. My hips are really bad so I do the best I can with that. It takes alot of planning and everybody's pain is different, but, try and keep your mind occupied if you are flying and that may help. Stretching the areas that really bother you helps. If we drive, we take turns driving and sometimes, because of all my husband's pain, I do most of it. We drive to VIrginia alot, to see my nephew, to go to Williamsburg, and then on to Virginia Beach. We pace ourselves, stop to rest and stretch when we need to and stay hydrated. Don't stop living because you have fibro. I know mine isn't as bad as others but I refuse to let it stop me. Sometimes, on the plane, I will listen to meditaions for pain and that actually helps me. I can usually fall asleep and when I wake, its not as bad. I hope you are able to travel to wherever you want to go!
Thanks super helpful and encouraging
