When a friend with chronic pain relayed that she was very upset that her pain was at a level one I overreacted. WHAT!!!, I live at 7-8 pain level every single day. I would jump over the moon to have a few days of a level one pain. How could she not be grateful! Blah blah blah my mind ranted. When I calmed my reaction and listened I realized she was headed towards a full blown anxiety attack
She had spent the last year working really hard with counseling, physical therapy, and diet to bring her… read more

This thread explored whether we have lost the art of listening, with members reflecting on how easy it is to compare our own pain to others instead of truly hearing what someone needs. Several members opened up about feeling dismissed by medical professionals who minimized their pain levels, and shared the emotional weight of living with fibromyalgia and CRPS without feeling believed. A recurring theme was the importance of self-advocacy, finding supportive doctors, and leaning on community connection when the medical world feels isolating.

Wicked and Claire🌷🌷, I completely understand🌷. Claire you and I talked about this a while back, being empathic. It can be difficult. Strangers do the same with me, they tell me their feelings. Listening is so important. Like wicked said, all we have to do... is listen.

@A MyFibroTeam Member Oh honey I truly hate the pain scale. I told a med person in ER or Out patients that I did not "Get" the pain scale . Or words to that effect.
We do not feel pain as others do and it can be quite overwhelming.
Many docs do not get it at all. Nor do many nurses.
We must fight and advocate for ourselves.
And if we have bad days or trying symptoms , don't hide it just to please others or "fit in " or to be "Normal". Be true Be You!

@A MyFibroTeam Member I've almost forgetten I had Fibro before. I've been so good for years even. Pain levels so good, mood and mind (cognition) good.
As if I could truly forget! Yes, It comes back with a vengence alright!
At present it is somwhere in the background. I know it's there , but it is like a pesky bothersome person. Can ignore it to a point. 😋😉
I have my not so good days, my better days, my leave me be days.
And I even have my I feel fantastic days.
I have Fibro, but I refuse to let it have me !

All i do is listen to others especially when they are in a bad way. Strangers will even tell me about their feelings. I am a empath and a healer from birth. It helps to listen.

I guess we can tend to tune out . Is it a self preservation thing?
@A MyFibroTeam Member I'm also empathetic , so I take on others energy and feelings . I've struggled with it without knowing quite what it was for many years.
I've been used to tune it out because it was so hard. I'm afraid I came off as uncaring when in fact I care deeply.
@A MyFibroTeam Member Fibro can indeed go dormant. I've experiensed this myself.
I had been good for many years in fact. I got whaloped with a bad flare last year. I go into what I call remission off and on as symptoms and pain recede into the background and I feel quite well. It does come back in variying degrees though. It doesn't just "Poof" go away!
