Tmj?

A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭
Brunswick, OH

Hello there, who suffers from TMJ as well? I have been having some weird throat symptoms and I'm trying to decide if they are related to the TMJ/fibro or something else! I will sometimes have trouble swallowing or feel like something is stuck in my throat. My throat muscles in my neck also feel very tight. Finally, I get this strange feeling when I swallow like there is something scratchy stuck at the back of my throat. Could it be nerve related? Thanks for the help!

Members responded to someone asking if their throat symptoms might be related to TMJ or fibromyalgia, with many suggesting alternative causes worth investigating. Several members shared that while TMJ can cause jaw pain, clicking, migraines, and muscle tension, throat and swallowing issues are more commonly linked to conditions like LPR (acid reflux), GERD, thyroid problems, or dysphagia (esophageal narrowing). Practical solutions included chiropractic adjustments and jaw massage for TMJ relief, fish oil supplements to reduce jaw tightness, bland diets and antacids for reflux, and medical scopes or thyroid checks to rule out other underlying causes.

Tmj is your jaw joint, the disorder is where you get pain in your jaw, mine has subluxation (partitial dislocation) and can get lock jaw, it clicks alot when you move it to talk or eat and it can affect muscles in throat and head so causes migraines etc I've not heard of your condition but I have TMJD and I get face pain worth having a goodle up of it xx good luck x

I have TMJ. It shouldnt be causing an issue with swallowing. I would definitely have your thyroid checked.

I had TMJ issues recently. I first saw a chiropractor to adjust neck and jaw. And then self massage of the jaw externally and internally. Seemed to work quite well. Hope you feel better soon. 😊

I do suffer from TMJ. I been taking fish oil for a few years now and it has helped so much. I at one point wondered if it was really working. When I went off it my jaw within hours tightened up. I went back on it and it eased up. Not sure if this would work for you or not.
