Members overwhelmingly encouraged getting a pet for fibromyalgia support, with many sharing that their dogs, cats, rabbits, and even birds provide invaluable companionship, emotional comfort, and gentle motivation to stay active on difficult days. Several members offered practical advice, including choosing a smaller breed or low-maintenance pet if energy and mobility are limited, considering indoor potty training options, and being mindful of grooming needs and exercise requirements when selecting a dog. A recurring theme was that pets seem to intuitively sense when their owners are struggling, offering comfort through their presence, and that the love and joy they bring far outweigh the work involved in caring for them.

I been rescuing birds since 1998 and they are a blessing to me the ones that I have kept. It does help that I have family that can help me if I need them. They are as @A MyFibroTeam Member said a blessing and they help me distract myself from the pain or the frustration of being sick.

I have a dog and a cat. They are both great company and would be lost without them. My dog knows when I'm not feeling great.

I find having a cat really joyful, I think animals can be very therapeutic, however I would maybe think about which breed as you might not feel like going for a long walk if you are having a bad day. X

Great idea. But be careful which breed you go for. Big dogs like labs, retrievers etc need lots of exercise and stimulation. Smaller breeds are great, just be aware of extra grooming with double coated breeds. Short haired dog may be better. Dogs are great company if you are lonely and keep you going.
