Is There Coorelation Between Domestic Violence, Child Abuse And Fibromyalgia?
A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

as a victim of abuse, at the hands of either my own 'protective/loving' ex-parents and ex-spouse , I wonder if there is a link between the two and Fibromyalgia. I am not certain of when the abuse began, however, I have flash backs to when I was three. So..my concern/thought is this: our brains are still developing and protecting us from pain. How did my brain compartmentalize the intense violence? How was it I survived?

Psychological and physiological trauma relates to the development of fibromyalgia. Physical and emotional suffering, after illness or severe emotional trauma, stress can turn on fibromyalgia especially in women.
Disassociation/depersonalization can be a protective reaction to violence, it may feel like being an outsider or bystander in the middle of the terror, like the person is watching a movie. Some people cope better than others.
So sorry about your experiences.

I think it probably does. My Pulmonologist thinks stress affects my asthma, and my numbers got a lot better after my husband moved out!

I just read an article saying they believe fibromyalgia can be from physical or mental trauma

@A MyFibroTeam Member,
In my case I developed Fibromyalgia because of having a lifelong history of Rheumatoid Arthritis.
My rheumatologist said some people that have RA can develop Fibro.

I have read that in other cases fibromyalgia can be caused by a history of trauma.
