Members responded to a question about sudden fibromyalgia onset by sharing that their symptoms often began abruptly following triggering events like car accidents, physical injuries, or periods of stress, with many describing how pain appeared overnight or escalated rapidly from minor discomfort to debilitating flares. Several members recounted their diagnostic journeys, including unexplained lumps, mysterious test results, and the frustration of growing lists of chronic conditions, while others noted they had subtle warning signs in hindsight, such as hormonal changes or longstanding aches dismissed as growing pains. A recurring theme was the acknowledgment that fibromyalgia likely has multiple root causes affecting the central nervous system, and while no one fully understands why it strikes, the shared experience of sudden, life-altering pain united the community in validation and mutual understanding.

Yes!!! Mine was sudden onset... 27 years ago. Felt like I’d been hit by a truck. Then the 2nd day I couldn’t move.

@A MyFibroTeam Member, I think it could be caused by anything because no one, even Drs, really knows. I have had aches and pains my whole life. Drs used to call it growing pains. But in college, I had a car accident that I walked away from, but within days I started feeling stiff and sore. That never really went away. Could be soft tissue damage from the accident??? Who knows. I also know that others started having trouble after child birth, other types of a accidents. There are so many reasons. If they ever really studied it, I think that they would have many different categories. Whatever, the reason, it seems to be things that affect the central nervous system and the vegus nerve. So, it very well could be harmones.
