Anyone Have To Have A Bone Scan During Diagnosis?

A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭
Rotherham, UK

I’m in the process of an official diagnosis. GP said I’m being referred to a rheumatologist. Then today had a call saying my GP is referring me for a bone scan. He didn’t say this on my last visit so I was confused and was wondering what this is for and if it is normal during diagnosis, if it is to eliminate other things maybe? The receptionist wasn’t able to explain very much obviously!

Members responded to a question about bone scans during fibromyalgia diagnosis, with many sharing that their doctors ordered them to rule out other conditions like arthritis, osteoporosis, Paget's disease, or autoimmune disorders such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. Several members described their own diagnostic journeys involving extensive testing including MRIs, nerve conduction studies, and blood work to eliminate conditions like MS, Lyme disease, and scleroderma before confirming fibromyalgia. A recurring theme was the variability in diagnostic approaches, with some members receiving thorough testing while others received minimal workup, and shared empathy around the physical discomfort of staying in uncomfortable positions during scans when living with chronic pain.

I had a bone scan because I was having a lot of pain in the bones in my legs. They were testing for Paget's disease of bone. From what I understand it can also be used to check for arthritis.

I've had bone scans that diagnosed my osteoporosis. He may be checking for that. It can affect your fibro as well as it's important to know about and get treated,,,
