Steam/cooking Symptoms
A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

I’m sorry to ask so many questions 😥

If I’m near or in a room where someone is cooking I begin to itch and sting, not sure why or what’s going on. Mostly face and scalp but it’s so distressing, anyone have an idea why? 😢

Itching and burning seems to be my most distressing symptom along with chemical sensitivity.

It's most probably your skin is sencitve to the odour of the spices.
If I ate spicy foods my hole body would itch badly.
Also I suffer with hay-fever.
So it must be the ouder of the food being cooked and your inhayling it in dies your nose itch as well?.
With haveing fybromayalgia are bodies are so insencertive Eg light sound your most probably be smell. Seek advice from your Gp ur consultant.
You may need to take Anhistamine.
I hope you get sorted soon 🤗💐❤️I hope this help I looked it up on the Internet.

A number of studies have found that fibromyalgia pain may be attributed to a “hypersensitive” nervous system that overreacts to stimuli. It makes sense then that many people with fibro experience sensory issues, causing certain types of light, sound, smell and touch to aggravate symptoms – including pain.5 Dec 2018

I have this EXACT same thing! Mostly my face. And while I'm cooking. It's one of the scariest things for me. I thought I was getting alergic to things when it started. But it's not an allergy. I'd ho to the ER just terrified. You are NOT alone! Sometimes I even feel like it's in my throat too..so weird. Fibro is a monster.

I have many allergies to foods, pollens and chemicals. If you had an allergy to food as Beverly Smith suggested you would have to eat it for you to itch like that. I itch all the time, heat will cause it but a lot of the itching stems from my spine and I want to rip the skin off my back it gets so bad. An allergy that would cause you to itch might be something topical like the fabric you are wearing, a body lotion, soap, shampoo etc. you should talk with your doctor about allergy testing. Even chemicals in your water can cause you to itch after you take a bath or shower. I dread showering now because of our water. In fact the shower water hitting my skin irritates at times.

Thank you.

I no longer sweat I just get itchy and burn but no hives or anything.

The room temperature does go up when cooking and I definitely struggle with smells. Seems like my skin barrier just doesn’t work anymore 😢

It’s not even when I’m cooking, when someone else is I feel it instantly.

I've had itching episodes in the past couple of years. It just occurred to me that it might be a fibro symptom. Sure enough, when I Googled it, it comes up a rare symptom of fibro. This episode started around the time my body aches started up again, so I think it's part of my flare up. I've stopped all scented soaps, lotions, etc. It's a prickly, annoying itch...mostly my arms, chest, back, sides of torso, sides and backs of legs and knees, tops of feet, and a little of my face. I welt a little when I scratch. I came here to see if anyone else experienced this, but since it's so rare, I'm not too surprised they haven't.
