Members connected over the shared experience of sharp, sudden needle-prick sensations that occur randomly throughout the body, with many describing how they instinctively look for a cause only to find nothing there. Several members identified stress as a major trigger and shared coping strategies including diaphragmatic breathing for 20 minutes to calm the nervous system, workplace flexibility to allow for rest breaks and hot baths, and medications like gabapentin for nerve pain, though some noted Lyrica was ineffective for them. A recurring theme was the frustration of fibromyalgia bringing new and unpredictable symptoms, the challenge of managing work and family responsibilities while dealing with brain fog and physical pain, and the importance of not letting constant symptom-checking prevent living life.

Yep. I get sharp pains, shooting pains throbbing pains that run down arms and legs. There are times where it will be so painful it will stop me in my tracks. When I am having a day where it's really bad, I take breaks and go lay down and do deep breathing (diaphragmatic breathing) for 20 minutes. It calms the heart rate (which always goes up when we're in pain and feeds the brain) and it also stimulates the vagus nerve which helps control pain. I'm very blessed that due to the nature of my condition and it being viewed as a true disability under the ADA that my company has allowed me some time to work from home. We have an open concept office (all this new age bullshit drives me crazy) so I have no where to go do my breathing in private (no closed conference rooms where you can lock the door , etc). So working from home is really my best option because I can break for a moment, do my breathing then go back to work or sit on the floor and stretch for a few minutes or even take a HOT BATH. It's so nice to be able to at least tend to my physical needs from a private place. Also, on days like that I'm usually a big crying mess and tend to cry on and off even while I am working at my computer so I try and listen to good sermons from people like Stephen Furtick, Sarah Jakes Roberts, Voddie Bauchman, etc and that inspires me some. I'm sorry you're going through this. Fibromyalgia is so hard and when you even remotely try and tell people that you have it, they just assume it's something you can easily fix or they go, "oh, my friend has that and she just takes Lyrica and is fine..why can't you take that?" No one really understands that fibromyalgia is a disorder of the CNS and impacts people differently. Stress being one of the main triggers. And in this day and age, how are we supposed to not be stressed? Our nation is so fast paced. We're expected to have work cell phones, work laptops, now we have to work on planes because we have WIFI there. We never get breaks. Kids have so much homework, extracurricular activities, etc. It's just exhausting thinking about it. Fibromyalgia is hard enough for a person regardless of your circumstances but having it while working and then being a parent to young children....all I can say is I just pray, pray,pray....
