Has anyone tried cognitive behavioral therapy for dealing with the pain of fibromyalgia? It was suggested to me so I have started it, I will do anything to help with the pain. And my insurance will cover it. There is a lot of work involved, You have to do a lot of soul-searching and work on your own. It has been a bit difficult because I have other stressors and obligations that sometimes interfere w/ homework assignments. Also, my counselor doesn’t really want to do any interpersonal talk… read more

Members shared mixed but largely positive experiences with cognitive behavioral therapy for fibromyalgia pain, with several describing it as transformative when combined with commitment, honesty, and patience in finding the right therapist fit. Some members found CBT helped them develop coping mechanisms, reduce emotional distress, and regain functionality without narcotics, while others noted it had limitations when pain was severe or felt it didn't work for them personally. A recurring theme was that CBT works best as one tool among many, requires significant personal effort and the right therapeutic match, and helps most by changing responses to pain rather than eliminating it entirely.

I have had extensive CBT for different issues. And for pain. When my daughter died, I about lost it. They tried pills, pills and more pills. Grief therapy, etc.The side effects of the meds were not worth the relief. NOTE: everyone is different! For me it was the only thing that brought me back to functional. That and GOD. It's a process for sure. You have to be committed. Brutally honest. It's our minds that send the pain signals. PERIOD So if we address the mind and heal, redirect or whatever YOUR needs are, then yes I am proof, it does work for ME. I had a lot of baggage. I have been at it for over 3 years. I take no narcotics for pain or depression. And I have OA, RA, DGD, Fibro and Scoliosis. And other health conditions. Everything comes from our control center. Our brain. I only use CBD and topicals and I have had Fibro for over 10 years. Learning how to control how I deal with stress, etc. has greatly improved my quality of life. AGAIN, it's all what you're willing to put into it as well. That is my story. I'm sure results vary from person to person 😘 Good luck 🙏

Ive had CBT (pre fibro diagnosis) for anxiety and panic attacks it really helped me and I find the whole ethos of understanding whats happening, identifying triggers, looking at your coping mechanisms and devising new coping mechanisms really proactive and beneficial, I am an advocate of CBT.
However at my worst with my fibro I underwent treatment with a pain psychologist - that so helped me, literally saved me - rather enabled me to save myself.

I think it can be a tool, but probably not a total symptom solver. Neither the mind nor the body stop at the neck, and it is the same neurotransmitters causing the problems at both ends.
