Members widely confirmed that amitriptyline can cause significant weight gain, with many sharing they gained between 30 and 80 pounds while on the medication, even when eating healthy and staying active. Several members offered reassurance that the weight gain is not the person's fault and suggested talking to a doctor about alternative medications like gabapentin, Lyrica, or Sertraline, though some noted these also have their own side effects and withdrawal challenges. A recurring theme was the difficult balance between managing pain and sleep versus maintaining a comfortable weight, with encouragement to prioritize what matters most for overall quality of life while staying open to trying different treatment options.

I gained sooo much weight with the amatriptaline. I have put on 60 pounds from all of the medications and steroids. When I went on lyrica, I dropped 18 pounds. It seemed to stop working so I went on gabapentin. Little weight gain with it but not as bad as the amatriptaline.

Make sure you decide which is more important, gaining a few extra pounds and still being healthy otherwise and having your symptoms under control and being able to sleep, or going back to how you felt before with no energy and poor sleep. Not to say those are your only options. Maybe your doctor can prescribe another medicine that works just as well, but I know how difficult that is to hop from one medicine to another. I sure hope you are able to find a balance that’s comfortable for you. I know it isn’t easy. Take care and sleep well!!

Go to your docs & ask to try something else as this might not b the right drug for u. I did take Sertraline which is an older drug u r less likely to put weight on with it but a huge but if u wish to come off it at any point then it is extremely hard to do so. U can't go from that drug straight to another either & know someone who was cutting his pills up in to quarters & still didn't manage to come off it. This was in the UK as called something else in the states. Hope this answer is helpful. Take care luvs & hugs Roo xx
