Would you share your story about how you are able to continue working, or how you've been forced to no longer work due to fibro? How is either scenario working for you? Do you feel certainty with your decision to work, or not work? Every time I get the itch to get a job, I feel like I'm not being honest with myself; that I know better! In truth, I know I am not physically able to work. But if I follow that instinct, then I feel so guilty. I'm 60 and I've worked all my life since age 13. How can… read more

Members opened up about the profound guilt and identity loss that comes with being unable to work due to fibromyalgia, with many sharing that they worked their entire lives before symptoms became too debilitating to continue. Several members described the practical and emotional challenges they face, including severe fatigue that makes even walking from a parking lot exhausting, brain fog that impacts communication and job performance, and the difficult process of applying for disability while managing financial stress and feelings of worthlessness. A recurring theme was the tension between wanting to contribute and needing to prioritize self-care, with members encouraging one another to accept their limitations without guilt, set firm boundaries if working part-time, and remember that their value isn't defined by their productivity.

I work from home as a web designer part time. I have clients that are mostly in the New Age industry and they don't give me a hard time about my hours etc.. I NEVER take on a toxic or pushy client. I work around 10-15 hours a week and have 90 clients over 5-6 years. I am also about to launch my astrology business (natal charts for people who are unwell in any capacity). Here are some of my rules: I don't answer my phone, clients must email, and book in a call if necessary, but I try to avoid and use email. I screen potential clients for stress factors and only take on those I feel aligned with. I have Wednesdays off and do NOT look at my emails outside work hours. I don't start till 10am, and if I have an appt during work hours I do NOT take it out of my personal time. If people don't think I can do my job well, they can sign up with someone else, but my testimonials show I have an great reputation so I don't worry about losing potential people any more. Working from home is the only way I can work, and because I live by myself I have full control over my environment which really, really helps. Some days I take a sick day and some days I take a mental health day. For me, as long as I get what I need to done that day, I am happy with that.

I've worked since I was 15 but this year it is make or break work wise! It's my 3rd year of having v debilitating, complex symptoms from surgeries, severe endometriosis, bowel resection and fibro sigh. I am only 39 and was teaching before all this kicked in. I am finding it hard to accept I might be like this forever and not be able to work and live life to the fullest. But I cannot live to work again like last year, where i was sleeping in preparation to work and then sleeping to recover from it with no life in between. Pointless. I think if I made it to 60 whilst working I'd pop a party popper and put my feet up! I'll make the most of whatever happens though I know that x

It's so great that you can tailor your work enviroment towards non-stressful. Sounds just right! Happy you found a balance. I look at jobs in offices, and think, no way can I handle the physicality and stress of an office job, too many hours without a break. But I may have to try, financially anyhow. Thank you for sharing. Hugs!

You're lovely 💕We want to live the best we can no matter what our age. You deserve a nice retirement. Don't burn yourself out to the point where you cant enjoy it. One last hope for me yet, think hysterectomy will happen this year you never know..it might well relieve lots of the symptoms still hopeful xx

Thank you for sharing. Every thing I read here is giving me more confidence to accept this. I've been fighting it si hard. Believing I could somehow go back to who I was before all this. As you say, it's not really a choice. I will remind myself of that. I'm so sorry for all the changes you had to make. You made yourself the priority. That is what I need to do. GHugs!!!
