Disability When Yougn?
A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

Would anyone be able to direct me on how to get disability benefits? I've applied before, but they rejected me "based on my age and education" which has nothing to do with fibromyalgia! >:( I'm 20 years old, was diagnosed at 5. I've worked near-sedentary jobs before and they were too much for me still, I have no way of supporting myself and SS thinks I'm faking. My parents and I don't know what to do, because we've never dealt with something like this. If anyone could give some tips or steps to… read more

Yeah, I got mine on the first try for the associated depression. I made sure they had all of my records by getting them myself and paying for them and making copies. Doctors get lazy and really don't want to help with your claim for fear they might have to do a disposition or something like that.

Get a Cognitive test done..by a Psychiatrist or Psychologist..it does prove cognitive dysfuction caused by Fibromyalgia...Social Security does not care about the 200 symtoms caused by Fibro..but when your brain does not work properly..( Memory.focusing..paying attention to detail..etc ) this applies to work..and Cognitive dysfunctions..completely relate to work...our brain shuts off whcih leads to many mistakes as well...a Cognitive test can prove this...otherwise forever they will try to put you in some type of work...this is how they deny you forever..but when the brain is not functionally properly..which happens often with Fibro..they can not fit you in a work box...Good Luck..

There is a social security fibromyalgia form you can find online. I had my rheumatologist fill it out. I also found other forms that I had my primary care doctor and pain management doctor fill out. I also gave them a letter statement they could sign or write their own letter stating my inability to work. I had friends, family, and co workers write letters. I wrote my own statement. I had 4 doctors stating that I couldn’t work plus all my past medical information. Good luck

So true about the depression and anxiety. Plus, be very detailed about side effects from your medications. It is difficult to work when spaced out, tied, confused sleepy from pain medications and fibro meds. Look up the side effects of your meds. If any apply, be sure to tell about it in detail. Good luck.

I agree with Claudia. I got my disability last year and I was evaluated by their psychiatrist. They said my cognitive functioning failed 3 out of 4 major mental tests. I did also have 5 conditions total.
