Members strongly validated the experience of hair loss with fibromyalgia, with many sharing that it commonly occurs during flares, is sometimes linked to anemia (a frequent fibromyalgia companion), or can be triggered by thyroid issues or certain medications like antidepressants. Several members offered practical solutions, including Biosil supplements for regrowth, iron injections for anemia-related hair loss (which many found more effective and tolerable than pills), stool softeners or natural remedies like cascara sagrada for iron-induced constipation, and getting blood work done to check thyroid function, vitamin levels, and hormones. A recurring theme was the importance of advocating for thorough testing with doctors, experimenting to find what works for your body, and recognizing that stress and chronic illness can disrupt normal hair growth cycles.

In CFS and fibromyalgia patients, as in any chronic illness, a very common cause of unusual hair loss is a condition called "Telogen Effluvium." This is when the normal cycles of natural growing and falling out of the hair follicles become jolted out of their usual random phase due to illness.

my hair falls out too. I assumed it was the seizure meds I take. Have your vitamins and minerals checked low zinc and other minerals can cause hair loss, hormone changes (fibro can mess with our hormones) can cause it too.

For those of you who are anemic and cant take iron pills i recommend the injections!! My iron levels were low for 15 years!! The tablets caused constipation and severe stomach pain so i stopped taking them, i tried liquid iron and that helped but was expensive. However no matter what i tried my iron levels were never in the normal range. I was desperate and did some reasearch and discovered iron injections, i asked my dr to give me them and they said they often don't use them as it can cause a brown stain on the skin... i asked where it was injected...basically on my butt! Lol. I said i dont care, i want to try it. I was havinh 1 injection a week for about 4 weeks (i never once got a stain on my skin either) and since then my blood tests show normal levels! That was about 4.5 years ago!!! I wish they had given it to me 15 years ago!!!! I now recommend them to my friends with low iron cos i wish i had heard about them sooner!

@A MyFibroTeam Member , I hear you my lovely, constipation is a bumma! There is a laxido syrup , taste rank! But works and I never go by guidelines and drink it out of the bottle not 2 spoonfuls and trust me you go just don’t drink to much of it just a gulp but more then 2 spoonfuls cos has I say to my GP I’m not a guideline! Give that a try , or a vindaloo lol , I can’t eat hot food, my mouth has always been to sensitive and suffering from the menopause for 22 years I just get way to hot sitting next to anyone eating hot food and each time I try hot and spicy food and end up running rand like a looney, let me know how you get on poppet xx

@LisaKilbourn-I welcome you to this great support group! I had my hair start falling out due, not to my hypothyroidism, but I had switched to an antidepressant-can’t recall the name-but I checked with the pharmacist and he told me hair loss happened to 2% of the people who tried it. My hair came out in clumps. I ran, not walked, to my doctor and had them switch me off of it.
